Bayern defeated Dortmund for the championship on goal differential
On a dramatic final day, Bayern Munich defeated Cologne to defeat Borussia Dortmund and claim their 11th straight Bundesliga championship.
The winning goal by Jamal Musiala in the 89th minute gave them the edge. Kingsley Coman’s earlier goal had been canceled out by a Cologne penalty, but Musiala enraged the away supporters. Despite coming back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime, Dortmund’s players and supporters were despondent. Sebastian Haller’s first-half penalty attempt was saved.
With only nine minutes left, Dejan Ljubicic of Cologne equalized from the spot to appear as though Bayern had lost their chance. Dortmund had an opportunity to tie the score late on through Niklas Sule, but Musiala curled home in the last seconds to shatter their hearts. Bayern defeated Dortmund for the championship on goal differential; both teams finished with 71 points. Thomas Tuchel, the manager who took over for Julian, was pleased with how the season ended.

Not a single person went home after that. A ceremony that felt funereal, almost sacred in its crafted penitence, was performed by the Borussia Dortmund players and fans as they stood in silence in front of the Yellow Wall. We, the players, humbly ask for pardon for grating cheese over our faces for the last ninety minutes. You may apologize to us, the fans, for grating your faces with a cheese grater. And we see the extent of your sacrifice in your bloody cheeks and filthy parts of the grated face. Added quiet for a moment. Edin Terzic, the coach, was sobbing.
